Memorial Day Weekend in America
Memorial Day weekend is upon us! If you don’t know, Memorial Day is an official American holiday to honor and remember those who have died in service to the United States. It falls on a Monday and at the end of May, which means this is a travel-heavy 3-day weekend that for many signifies the beginning of the summer season!
Summer is my favorite season, and it is returning to us again in the northern hemisphere- this is something to celebrate! Whether you’re traveling, going to parades, celebrations, or hanging out at home with family, crowd-pleasing party recipes are a must.
I have picked out of my repertoire 13 delicious and healthy recipes that will help you party on in the warmer weather and take advantage of all the different flavors in season right now. None of these recipes include health-set-back ingredients (e.g., eggs, canola oil, cheese, and vinegar) or high amounts of fat or “filler foods” (foods that take up space and don’t offer healing qualities). You won’t miss them, either!
I have included a variety of recipes for a variety of different people, gatherings, and diet preferences.
For drinks, look for additive-free options such as coconut water, sparkling water with lemon or lime, and pure fruit juices (that are free from citric acid, natural flavors, and other preservatives). I have listed a few of my drink recipes below!
Party Recipes
Vegan Kababs- These kebabs contain onion, cilantro, ginger, and parsley. All very flavorful ingredients. Combined with beans, other spices, and herbs, you have a filling barbecue option.
Jackfruit Kebabs- These kebabs are a plant-based burger alternative. They are bean-free, grain-free, and fat-free!
BBQ Maple Chaat Vegetable Skewers- Feel free to get creative with your skewers! There are so many different seasonings you can use and vegetable combinations. Just make sure your seasonings aren’t loaded with secret additives like yeast, msg, or poor-quality salts!
Curried Potato Burger– This is a fun take on the traditional veggie burger and boasts a very flavorful curry profile!
Gluten-free Burger Buns- These are great if you want to make extra dough and freeze for later.
Classic Potato Salad- This recipe is a crowd-pleaser. Each time I make this, it is among the first to go!
Spicy Potato Pea Mash- If you love potato salad, this is a spicy version that includes the healing ingredient peas! The green imparts a fun color and is a twist on the classic.
Rayyaan’s Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Vanilla Frosted Cupcakes- A yummy sweet treat that won’t contribute to any chronic symptoms or disrupt your health. A crowd-pleasing recipe.
Delicious Sorbets- Mango, Pineapple, and Strawberry. A nutritious treat to cool down with, make and store them beforehand.
Dairy-Free Strawberries and Cream- Make ahead of time and serve the strawberries alongside the cream for a simpler take.
Healthy Chips Ahoy Cookie Recipe- Tested until I got it right, this recipe features the lowest amount of (healthy) oil I could get away with and still boasts that nostalgic cookie taste from childhood. These cookies use vegan chocolate chips, but you can use carob chips instead if you are avoiding chocolate.
Honey Ginger Lemonade- Just four ingredients and the ginger and lemon will help you with digestion!
Spicy Mock-Scow Mule- A more complicated recipe, but an incredibly refreshing alcohol-free take on the popular Moscow Mule cocktail.
