I see nutritional yeast everywhere these days…but is it really good for you?
I was over the moon when I found Nutritional Yeast (or “nooch” as people like to call it), years ago in 2009. I had just started a raw food diet and was making kale chips. I remember using nutritional yeast for the first time and was absolutely HOOKED.
Of course, I had no idea at the time how bad it was for me. I ate SOOO much nutritional yeast between 2009 and 2012 when I met Anthony William for the first time and learned that it is loaded with MSG. Say WHAT???
Some of the symptoms I had from consuming so much nutritional yeast included loss of appetite, stomach aches, and headaches, and I was extremely addicted. I couldn’t stop thinking about kale chips, and I would devour an entire bowl of them in one sitting – I’m talking about kale chips I made from THREE bunches of kale!
To add insult to injury, I would drink kombucha, apple cider vinegar, and eat fermented foods attempting to heal my stomach aches. Little did I know that was compounding the issue.
Like everyone else, my healing has been a journey of misinformation. Often times we find that products are named to give the perception of health, but upon further investigation, we find hidden poisons ready to sabotage your good intentions.
Let’s take a closer look at nutritional yeast to get the full story. What I learned from Medical Medium® about Nutritional Yeast in 2012 helped me to recover my gut and remove the yeast toxicity from my brain.
So…. What’s the problem with Nutritional Yeast?
Its made from GMO beets (yes, you heard that right)
It converts to MSG in the brain (you heard that too!)
It triggers addiction by triggering adrenaline
It’s not nutritional
You can get stomach aches, it is an irritant
Nutritional Yeast Is Made From GMO Beets
The primary food source for nutritional yeast is processed GMO beets. All sugar beets are GMO. Yeast becomes what it eats, which is why the industries can say that technically it is not GMO because it did not start out that way – it consumed the GMO beet and took on its toxic properties. Legally, the food industries are not required to disclose this information.
Glutamic Acid (MSG)
You may hear that nutritional yeast does not contain MSG, but that is false.
Nutritional Yeast contains a toxic form of glutamic acid which is the foundation of MSG. It is not just a little toxic, it is extremely toxic. Now, this may be hard to hear if you’re a Nooch lover like I was. When I heard this information for the first time, I was like, NO WAAAAY!
But stay with me.
Glutamic acid is found at a low level in all plants and foods. Yeast, on the other hand, Has a lot of glutamic acid which is aggressive and addictive.
When any yeast grows, glutamic acid forms. This includes bakers’ yeast and yeast used for bread making (including sourdough). This glutamic acid is designed for the yeast, and not for the human body.
Yeast glutamic acid mimics MSG, and most people don’t realize that the MSG from the yeast is going to their brains and causing trouble. MSG deposits crystalize around brain cells and cause the following symptoms:
- Weakness in the central nervous system
- Fatigue
- headaches
- Inconsistencies of blood sugar
Glutamic acid is an electrical dampener of the brain and is highly addictive. Three years of eating nutritional yeast, and I was definitely experiencing brain fog. However, I didn’t realize it was coming from the massive amounts of nutritional yeast I consumed.
The Adrenaline Factor
Nutritional yeast is not a food, it is a toxic contaminate. It is poisonous to the body and causes a reaction.
One of the ways the body reacts is by producing adrenaline. Your body reacts with an adrenal high, an epinephrine surge. Eating nutritional yeast is poisonous, and your body recognizes it as such, releasing adrenaline. So, your high comes from the adrenaline surge when the poisons enter your body.
Intestinal Symptoms & Stomach Ache
Boy, did I learn this the hard way! I ended up with severe stomach aches after starting nutritional yeast but had no idea that it was nutritional yeast that was causing them.
If you already have intestinal issues, be warned! Eating nutritional yeast may aggravate them. Nutritional yeast irritates the lining of the intestinal tract and can feed the pathogens causing stomach irritation. It can cause headaches, weakness in your central nervous system, fatigue, and addiction. Irritation can be triggered even days after eating nutritional yeast.
Because of this, the irritation is most often blamed on something else, and people remain confused about the true cause of their intestinal problems. It can cause a chronic condition inside the intestinal tract as it irritates the nerves, and anything that may already be inflamed can worsen.
How To Heal From Nutritional Yeast Toxicity
We have all been poisoned by MSG in our lifetime. The key is focusing on what steps we can take to detoxify that poison.
- Remove all sources of MSG from your diet. For a more complete list of sources of MSG, check out my blog Hidden Source Of MSG.
- Bring in the Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie daily to help pull the MSG from your liver, brain, and other parts of your body.
- HYDRATE so your body can flush the poisons. Use good filtered water (we recommend the Berkey filter) with some lemon squeezed in. Further helpful flushing agents are cucumber juice and coconut water as well.
- Reduce overt fat and salt intake – this helps your body flush poisons.
- Bring in healing foods such as wild blueberries, spinach, cilantro, potatoes, apples, celery, bananas, melons, winter squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, broccoli, pears, mangos, blackberries, strawberries, and Atlantic dulse.
- Helpful supplements: fresh celery juice, craving shifter shot, adrenal fight or flight stabilizer shot, pharmaceutical exposure shot, energy shifter shot, California poppy shock therapy, lemon balm shock therapy, 5-MTHF, Ashwaganda, celery force, barley grass juice powder, B-complex, chaga mushroom powder (or capsules), curcumin, EPA/DHA (fish free), GABA, lemon balm, L-glutamine, licorice root, melatonin, raw honey, spirulina, Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, wild blueberry powder (or juice), and wild blueberry powder.

Bottom Line
Nutritional yeast is something to avoid! To go even deeper into this subject, try listening to the Medical Medium® Podcast “Nutritional Yeast: Is It A Beauty OR Beast.”
Now that you have truthful knowledge about nutritional yeast, please spread the word. People can be so easily fooled by the clever name of a product, and too often do not take the time to do their own homework. There are poisons hiding in so many products when it comes to food. It is critical to learn how to read ingredient labels and nutritional information. As educated and informed consumers, we can all help drive the market’s direction to clean products. Our purchasing power is strong, let’s use it and encourage others to do the same. We will make a difference in this world!
