8 Signs It’s Time to Cleanse: What Your Liver Has Been Trying to Tell You

There are eight signs it’s time to cleanse, and most people don’t connect a single one of them to their liver until years after the symptoms start.

Key Takeaways

  • Most people wait for a lab result or a diagnosis before they consider it time to cleanse, but the real signals show up years earlier.
  • Waking up tired after a full night’s sleep, bloating after meals, and brain fog that comes and goes are three of the eight signs covered in this post.
  • A sluggish liver is not the same as a diseased or failing liver, and it is far more common than most people realize.
  • Weight that will not move no matter how carefully you eat is often the liver storing what it cannot yet process.
  • Hot flashes and night sweats are frequently blamed on hormones alone, when the liver plays a large role in regulating body temperature.
  • Emotional ups and downs, including anxiety that resurfaces, can be part of the cleansing process and tend to soften with each round.
  • Simple morning habits, like hydrating before eating and keeping fat out of breakfast, are enough to start supporting the liver before attempting a structured cleanse.

Back in April I started an Advanced 3:6:9 cleanse. I planned to repeat it through the summer, and by the time I sat down to write about it, I had been doing 7-8-9 day repeats back to back for more than a hundred days.

Over the course of my life I have had 147 courses of antibiotics, many rounds of steroids, toxic heavy metal exposure, and a poisonous spider bite that almost killed me. My liver had been carrying all of it. What finally made me start was my weight, which would not shift no matter what I tried, and my sleep, which had been broken for years. Within two weeks the sleep issues were gone and my deep sleep had doubled. By day 51 I was down 23 pounds, and by the time I wrote about it, 30.

You can read the whole story in 100 Days on the Advanced 369 Cleanse if you want the details.

If you have been wondering whether it is time for you to cleanse, you are in very good company. I get asked that question more than almost any other, and usually by women who have been putting it off because they do not feel sick enough to deserve it.

That is the part I want to talk about. Most of us wait for something we can point to before we act, a diagnosis or a number on a lab report. The signals come much earlier than that, and they are small enough to explain away for years.

What a Sluggish Liver Is

The Medical Medium® information I have worked with over the years has changed the way I look at these symptoms. I love the word liver, because the word live is sitting right inside it. It is the organ that keeps you living, and I believe it is the most important one in the whole body.

Your liver takes on everything that comes into your body and everything your body makes on its own. Old pharmaceuticals, pesticides, toxic heavy metals, viruses that have been living there for decades, the fat from every meal, and the adrenaline from every hard day. It stores and neutralizes what it can so that the rest of you is not dealing with it directly, and it manages that for years before there is any sign of strain.

Then it starts to slow down. That is a different thing from a diseased or a failing liver, and it is far more common than most people realize.

“Nine out of ten people, children included, have a sluggish liver without being aware of it.”

Anthony William, medicalmedium.com

Part of why it goes unnoticed for so long is timing.

“When people are younger they often don’t show the signs of a sluggish liver yet because it takes time—sometimes decades—for the liver to start to burn out and for symptoms to appear.”

Anthony William, medicalmedium.com

One thing I have noticed over the years is that women arrive with these symptoms already sorted into separate boxes, each one belonging to a different specialist. Very often the eight below are all coming from the same place.

8 Signs It Is Time to Cleanse

1. You Wake Up Tired No Matter How Long You Sleep

Waking up tired might be a sign you need a cleansePin

This is usually the first thing a woman tells me, and it has almost always been explained away as stress, or as a normal part of being busy. When she tells me she sleeps eight hours and wakes up feeling like she never went to bed, I am thinking about her liver and her adrenals, very often both.

A low grade virus sitting in the liver produces waste that the body has to deal with around the clock, and that alone is tiring. Underneath it, adrenals that have been running on emergency fuel for years have very little left to give in the morning. Those two often go together. Toxic adrenaline is one of the favorite foods of the viruses living in the liver, which is why I rarely find one without the other.

I know this one from the inside. After that spider bite, the neurological fatigue was so severe that I ended up bedridden for almost a year. I used to call it mattress island. It took another three or four years after that before the fatigue fully lifted, and I am free of every symptom from it today. But I have not forgotten what it is like to sleep and wake up with nothing.

2. You Bloat After Almost Every Meal

Bloating starts higher up than the gut. When the liver slows down it produces less bile, and when bile weakens, your stomach’s hydrochloric acid weakens along with it. Bile breaks down and dissolves fat.

Hydrochloric acid does more than break down protein: it separates the fats from the proteins while the food is still in your stomach, and it prepares those fats so that the bile can finish the work further along. When both are low, fats and proteins reach the intestinal tract still joined together and largely undigested. They sit there longer than they should, ferment, and produce the gas that swells your belly by the end of the day.

This is why the salad and the heavy dinner can both leave you bloated, and why rewriting the food list over and over never quite settles it.

3. Brain Fog That Comes and Goes

Losing a word mid sentence, walking into a room and forgetting why, reading the same page three times. Women apologize to me for this constantly, as if it says something about their intelligence.

“The root causes of brain fog can be traced to both the liver and the brain”

Anthony William, medicalmedium.com

Viral waste and toxic heavy metals leaving a congested liver travel up to the brain, and that is where the fog comes from. It lifts on some days and returns on others, which is part of how you can tell that it is not structural.

4. You Wake in the Night and Cannot Get Back to Sleep

If you fall asleep without any trouble and then wake in the early hours, I look at the liver first. For many women this happens somewhere between one and four in the morning, although the exact hour varies. The liver does its cleaning and repairing work while you sleep, and when it is overburdened, that can disturb your sleep and cause you to wake. Being awake all night and anxious is a different picture altogether, and that pattern points more toward the brain than the liver.

I want to be careful here, because there is a popular chart going around that assigns each organ its own hour of the night. That comes from Chinese medicine, not from this work, and it is why I will not give you a time and tell you what it means. What I ask about instead is how heavy the evening meal was, how late it was eaten, and how much the liver was already carrying before dinner.

5. Your Skin Keeps Flaring

Eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and acne are all treated as skin problems, and creams help so little because the skin is not where they begin.

Skin flaring is a sign that it is time to cleansePin
“Eczema and psoriasis actually arise from a particular type of overloaded liver. Acne, too… is a sign of a liver under a different type of duress.”
Anthony William, medicalmedium.com

After my second daughter was born I spent two years trying to heal my own eczema, and nothing touched it until I understood what was underneath it. If your skin has been flaring for years and you have run out of creams to try, that is worth hearing.

6. The Weight Will Not Move

This was my own strongest sign, and it is the one that carries the most shame with it. Women come to me convinced they lack discipline, when they have been eating carefully for years.

When the liver cannot process everything it is holding, the body parks those toxins in fat tissue to keep them away from the organs. That tissue will not release while the liver is still too burdened to handle what would come out of it, which is why eating less and moving more so often does nothing at all. Mine did not move for years, and by then I had tried everything I knew how to try.

7. You React to Things That Never Bothered You Before

Perfume in a shop makes your head ache. Cleaning products make you feel ill. Foods you have eaten your whole life now leave you unwell, and the list of what you can tolerate keeps shrinking. A liver that is already full cannot filter much of anything else, so everything reaches you undiluted. Many women tell me they think they are simply becoming fragile with age, and that is almost never what I find.

8. Hot Flashes and Night Sweats You Have Been Told Are Hormonal

Hot flashes, night sweats, and swings in body temperature are handed to women as proof that their hormones are the problem, often decades before menopause would naturally arrive.

Your liver is what keeps your body temperature steady. When you are cold it creates heat to warm you up, and when you are too warm it takes that heat on so you can cool down. A liver that is already carrying a long term viral load along with toxic heavy metals and other poisons has very little capacity left for that work, and in most of the women I see, that is where the heat is coming from.

So if you are in your thirties or forties and have been told that this is simply your age, that is not where I would stop looking.

What Happens When You Finally Give the Liver Help

A woman I worked with had come through years of depression, anxiety and burnout. It had taken her a long time to get out of it, and by the time she started her first 3:6:9 she was well. Partway through the cleanse it felt as though all of the anxiety had come back, and she said it was like being dropped back into a black hole she had climbed out of years earlier. She could not understand why it was happening now, when she had already come so far and felt so much better.

She kept going. As she moved through the rest of the cleanse the feelings began to settle, and by the end they had gone. She told me afterwards that she felt lighter, like someone had lifted something very heavy off her shoulders.

It came back on her next 3:6:9, and on the one after that, but milder each time, until eventually it stopped happening at all. She is in a good place now.

This is something I always talk about before someone starts a cleanse. Old adrenaline and emotional material can come back up during a cleanse, sometimes as anxiety or as feelings you thought you had already worked through. If you have spent years working on your mental health, this can be frightening because you may wonder why something you thought was behind you has suddenly returned, or whether the cleanse is working at all.

When you are in the middle of it, the storm feels like it is you. It is above you, and it passes. The ups and downs are part of a rhythm that leads to emotional and physical freedom over the long term.

This is also why I talk about the emotional side of cleansing alongside the physical changes. It is easy to think of a cleanse as something that only changes what is happening in the body, but for some people there is an emotional component as well. The cravings that turn up during a cleanse come from the same release.

Where to Start If You Recognized Yourself

You do not need to overhaul your life this week. Start in the morning, because that is when the liver is finishing its overnight work and is most ready for help.

Hydrate before anything else. Water with fresh lemon, and celery juice on an empty stomach if you can get to it. Then keep fats out of your breakfast, so the liver can keep cleaning through the morning instead of switching over to producing bile. Bring the overall fat in your day down, eat your heavier meal earlier in the evening, and give your body more fresh fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens to work with. That alone is a real beginning, and many women feel the difference from it before they ever attempt a structured cleanse.

The other thing I would ask you to change is how often you eat. When your blood sugar drops, your body reads it as a warning that you might be about to starve, and it produces adrenaline to keep you going. Doing that several times a day, for years, wears out organs that are already struggling. Eating something every ninety minutes to two hours prevents it, and it does not have to be a meal. Something with natural sugar alongside something that carries mineral salts is enough. Celery with dates and apples is one I suggest often.

When you are ready for something deeper, that is where the 3:6:9 comes in, and there are much gentler versions of it than the one I did. Which one is right for you depends on where your body is right now.

If you recognized yourself in more than a couple of these, I would not read that as bad news. Every one of them means your body is still signaling clearly, and that it has been protecting you for a long time. And please hear this part: you do not have to be sick enough to deserve a cleanse. Most of what I have described here is the body asking for help long before anything serious has happened.

To your peace and happiness,

Muneeza

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when it's time to do a 3:6:9 cleanse?

There is no single test that tells you. Most of the women I work with start noticing the eight signs above long before they consider a structured cleanse. If you already recognize several of them, a gentler protocol is often the right place to begin. If you’re not sure which one fits your body right now, this guide to choosing the right cleanse walks through the options.

What is the difference between sluggish liver symptoms and liver disease?

A sluggish liver is not the same as a diseased or failing liver. It is a much more common, much earlier stage, where the liver is simply overloaded and slowing down. According to Anthony William, nine out of ten people have a sluggish liver without realizing it, which is why the signs above so often get explained away as stress or getting older.

Can liver detox symptoms include anxiety or emotional overwhelm?

Yes, and it catches a lot of people off guard. Old adrenaline and emotional material can resurface during a cleanse, sometimes feeling like anxiety you thought you had already worked through. It tends to be strongest on the first round and softer each time after. If you want help telling the difference between a normal detox reaction and a real setback, my Detox Reactions vs. Chronic Symptoms Masterclass covers exactly that.
