Equipment

  • 1 Large sautee pan
  • Potato masher
  • Serving dish

Ingredients

  • 4 – 6 cups organic frozen peas thawed
  • 1 organic onion finely diced
  • 3 organic garlic cloves mashed
  • 1 inch organic knob ginger grated
  • 1 tsp organic garam masala
  • 1 tsp organic cumin powder
  • 2 tsp organic pomegranate syrup or use date syrup or maple syrup
  • 1 tsp organic yellow curry powder
  • ½ tsp organic red chilli flakes can use more if needed
  • 1 organic lime juiced
  • ½ cup organic cilantro chopped

Instructions

  • Water sauté the onions, garlic and ginger. I like to use water or vegetable broth for sautéeing.
  • Once the onions become soft and release their water, add in all the spices.
  • Cook until well mixed and aromatic.
  • Add in the peas (it is important they are thawed, because they will otherwise release a lot of water into the pan).
  • Cook the peas down until the flavor from the masala is well-mixed.
  • Add the pomegranate syrup (or use another sweetener syrup if you don’t have the pomegranate syrup) and cook until it’s thoroughly cooked.
  • Once the peas are fully cooked, take a potato masher and mash them well so that the flavor of the masala really seeps into them. You don’t have to mash all the peas. I like them roughly mashed.
  • Top with lime juice and garnish with fresh cilantro and serve!

Why this pea mash recipe supports healing

This masala pea mash recipe is a quick, healing dish built around Pakistani spices and fat-free ingredients that support the body’s ability to cleanse.

If you are interested in trying Pakistani spices, or are looking for a comforting addition to your healing repertoire, this is a great option. I love this recipe because it is comforting, filling, and the curry flavor profile gives it a kick. It is like a comforting curry explosion: yellow curry powder, garam masala, cumin, ginger, gunpowder podi (ask me about this in the comments!) and lime mix together with peas and garlic. If you like, serve this on lettuce cups with extra lime and tomato for a refreshing and filling meal.

It is good to remember that when we eat high-fat diets we are limiting the amount of cleansing that our body is able to do.

It is very common right now to eat a high-fat diet consisting of different oils, meats, dairy, and nuts and seeds. However, it would be in your best interest to cut back on dietary fat, especially if you are healing from chronic illness. It is rarely these foods that offer us the greatest healing benefits.

This is a great cleansing recipe because it is full of healing foods and fat-free. Fat-free recipes help keep our blood thin, which gives our body an opportunity to focus on detoxing. When given the chance, our body will detox byproducts from our cells’ natural functions and accumulated environmental toxins such as pathogens, fragrance, petrol, and pesticides. If you are deciding which cleanse to begin, read my guide on how to choose the best cleanse for you for a clear starting point.

If you need more comfort foods in your diet, look to the main star of this dish: peas.

Ingredient breakdown and healing benefits

If you enjoy learning about why each ingredient matters, this section is for you. The information below is drawn from Medical Medium® Life-Changing Foods Expanded:

Peas

Muneeza Ahmed
Peas are a true healing comfort food for the body.

Peas are the main star of this recipe for good reason. They are one of the most underrated healing comfort foods, sitting alongside potatoes as a true plant-based support for the body. Despite being mass-produced, peas offer deep healing benefits.
They are a great source of bio-available glucose for the liver, brain, and heart. They are also a cardiovascular food, rich in minerals and antioxidants that help fuel the heart.

For skin, hair, and nails, peas are especially useful. They help fortify connective tissue, support skin repair, aid hair regrowth, boost collagen, and help nails grow. This is in large part due to their high mineral and vitamin content and their ability to reverse deficiencies that have built up over time.

Pomegranate

Muneeza Ahmed
Pomegranates are skilled at removing substances from the body that should not be there.

Pomegranates are skilled at removing substances from the body that should not be there — cysts, nodules, kidney stones, gallstones, protein buildup, bile, toxic calcium, follicle and pore buildup, industrial estrogens, earwax, pesticides, DDT, and lactic acid are among the things pomegranate can support clearing.

The high-quality glucose in pomegranate makes it a great brain food, replenishing your brain, aiding in focus, and helping to relieve brain fog.

I use pomegranate syrup to add sweetness to this dish. It pairs well with lime juice and chili pepper. If pomegranate syrup is not easy for you to find, date syrup or maple syrup both work. Both are mineral-rich options with high-quality glucose and carry their own healing benefits.

Chili

Muneeza Ahmed
If you have a sluggish, stagnant, and stuck liver, capsaicin has the ability to help provide a window of detoxification.

The heat from hot peppers is genuinely anti-pathogenic. Capsaicin warms up the tissues it touches and can heat pathogens to the point that they die. This is particularly true in the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, and intestinal tract, where hot peppers travel through directly.

Capsaicin also stimulates lymphatic drainage. That is why your sinuses run when you eat something spicy — fluid is moving into the kidneys for filtration, creating space for the liver to release some of its stored toxic load. If you have a sluggish or stuck liver, capsaicin can provide a real window of detoxification.

In this recipe I use chili flakes, which are a dried blend of chilis. Add more if you like a kick, but please do not overdo it. Hot peppers are a sidekick in a healing protocol, not the star. Eating too much can cause injury to the digestive tract.

How to serve and customize this recipe

This is a quick, filling recipe that works any time of year. The spice blend includes yellow curry powder, garam masala, cumin, ginger, gunpowder podi, and lime. Together they give the dish a warming curry profile that is deeply comforting.

If you like, serve the pea mash in lettuce cups with extra lime and tomato for a refreshing and filling meal. It also works well on its own as a warm side dish or a light lunch.

If you enjoy fat-free comfort recipes, you might also love my fat-free creamy mushroom sauce for another warming, oil-free option.

Frequently asked questions

Date syrup or maple syrup both work well in this recipe. Both are mineral-rich and carry high-quality glucose. Date syrup has a deeper, slightly earthy sweetness that pairs well with the curry profile. Maple syrup is lighter and more neutral. Start with a small amount and adjust to your taste.
When dietary fat is low, the blood stays thinner and the liver has more capacity to release stored toxins rather than processing fats. This does not mean you avoid all fat permanently. It means that on days when you eat fat-free healing recipes, your body has a window to do deeper detox work. This is especially relevant for those recovering from chronic illness who are following a structured healing protocol.
