The Mold Protocol I needed to Use

from Muneeza on Vimeo.

So, this happened.
I had to have my entire basement gutted due to a water leak and mold growth situation.
My hubby was out of town. I was handling work and three kids solo.

I am HIGHLY reactive to mold.
Was I freaking out?? HELL yeah.
I started to pull out every tool I had for mold exposure and protection from it. Plus I had had mold exposure and needed to make sure that none of those spores took hold in my body.

But it was not just the mold. They had to gut out and rebuild the entire basement. And yes, I have a ton of chemical sensitivities.
Rebuild would involve construction materials, dust, polymers, solvents, paints and glues.
Then I had my second freak out. Oh crap crap crap!!!! How am I going to figure this out?
Lots of deep breathing was happening. Lots of praying. Lots of centering and grounding, when literally the ground underneath me was coming undone.
SO, what did I do?

  • I prayed. A LOT.
  • Overnighted 4 diffusers and used Anthony’s remedy from Spirit about diffusing thyme, bergamot, sage & rosemary. I already have a stock of these oils, for an emergency situation just like this. So I got the diffusers going.
  • Contacted a green restoration company (amongst others). Researched the antimicrobial agents they used to kill mold. It was a combination of 35% hydrogen peroxide and a custom blend of an agent that is not based on synthetic chemicals. They gave me all the specs and it looked ok to me, so we decided to go ahead with that.
  • I started to locate the cleanest non-VOC paints and woods that I could find. I found a local supplier and ordered the paints. There is a brand called SafeCoat (which ranges in a similar price to mainstream paints) that is really amazing. Even the painters commented that it was a really high quality paint and they liked working with it.
  • I located several pure bamboo floors and also a few hardwoods (that were not expensive) that were pure not blended, nor laminates, not just the covering on the floor. This ensures the best quality of material with the least chemical gunk in it. The best way to do this would be to use pure wood and stain it and lacquer it with clean non-VOC materials. However, we did not have time to do that.
  • I started to eat a lot of the aromatic herbs in my diet – totally fresh herbs chewing them straight up, like sage, oregano, rosemary and thyme.
  • Upping my spirulina which also removes mold from the body. I started doing about 2 tbsps a day.
  • I take aloe every day and I upped that too, especially since it is highly anti mold.
  • I increased the amount of chaga tea I was drinking daily from 1 tsp to 2 tsp a day. If you are not already doing this with mold exposure, just start with the 1 tsp a day.
  • Add in rose hips tea, if you are not already doing it. It is powerful against removing mold in the body.
  • In general the foods I increased were apples, apricots, dates, figs, grapes, kiwi, melon, oranges, honey, pears, pomegranates, celery (of course), cruciferous, leafy greens & sweet potatoes.

I used a lot of recommendations personally that I have put into my Greening Your Home webinar which you can snag here.  I have walked into the basement several times and hung out there for a while and I have had no reaction to anything.

For this, I am SO deeply grateful. The last thing I needed was to have a reaction that would trigger more viral activity.
And yes, this can happen to any of us at any time, because you never know when there is a storm brewing inside that could trigger into something big. So prevention and caution is the way to best protect yourself.

And prayer.
Lots of prayer.
Thank you as always for sharing this journey with me.

It is my greatest honor to serve you,
With health,

  1. I’m sorry you had went through all of that. I’ve been dealing with a Chronic mildew issues in my closet affecting all of my clothes and shoes. I had a plumber come out to check for a leak because I had a high moisture reading in my closet, but he didn’t see a leak. I Washed and cleaned everything and used a low VOC paint that had mold and mildew inhibitor’s in it and painted the closet. Just waiting on new closet doors because the old ones still smell musty.
After finishing the closet, I then found out the inside of my bed was completely covered in mold. I have one of those select comfort air beds for many years and they are prone to getting mold inside the chambers. I’m so glad I unzipped it and looked. Even though it’s an older mattress, the company is standing behind the product and sending me a whole new mattress. I used to diffuse essential oils, but I thought on his essential oil podcast that they cause mold to grow so I stopped. I think all these molds have been contributing to my chronic fatigue.

    1. Beth – amazing work on being a detective and being proactive to protect your health. So great to hear that the company will send a new mattress, which is the right thing to do. And yes, diffusing oils is helpful to clean the air but it won’t remove the source of mold that still causes an ongoing problem. We have to remove the mold at its source – something I’m also dealing with myself right now! Keep me posted on how it’s going. – Muneeza

What is the best material to use for plumbing? Copper or PEX? Or something else? If so what?

I know copper isn’t good for us, but also have heard PEX can have lead and have more bacteria.

What would you recommend someone repipe their home with?

  3. this information is so helpful as i navigate black mold all over my small apartment building. i have three diffusers… with the four essential oils, should i combine them all into all my diffusers and go? or should i only put one type of oil in each diffuser?

    thanks so much

    1. Hi Kristen, so sorry to hear you’re struggling with mold! It’s becoming more and more common. I would rotate each oil in a separate diffuser – 2-3 days for each oil continuously over several weeks. Note that this will help to clear the spores out of the air but you may have to address the source of the spores directly! Let me know how it goes. – Muneeza

  4. Hi Muneeza, I had mold grow in a container of standing water I had in my apartment I didn’t know about. I’ve removed the container and my health is improving using MM protocols but now I have mold spores in that room where the container was located. I’ve been diffusing the oils you recommended but it doesn’t seem to be working. The room I had the container in is closed off but I still need to address the spores. I live in an apartment and can’t call a company to come in. Is the something you can recommend that I can purchase myself? A friend recommended renting an ozone machine or concrobium but I don’t know if either is safe. Thank you.

    1. Hi Susan, can you share how you’re certain the oils are not working? Have you had a mold test performed? It takes time to remove mold in the air, which is what the oils are meant to do. Rotating them individually for several weeks should help. As far as remedying the mold from its source you may need professional help, and will certainly need to address it directly – the oils won’t remove the source unfortunately. I hope this helps! – Muneeza

    1. Hi Susan, I would keep the oil diffusing consistently for as long as they are needed – at least a few days and ideally for at least a week or more if you’re spending much time where there is mold. It may take time in especially bad cases. The oils will help kill the mold spores in the air so that you are not exposed as much, but to remove the actual mold itself you may need to take additional measures.

  5. Please, could you please tell me what I can use to clean my humidifier to prevent mold and other problems that is natural and won’t hurt me to breath in if there’s residue in the humidifier that’s left over? I’m desperate, could you please help?

  6. Hi Muneeza,

A number of green remediation companies in North America fog homes use a combination of InstaPURE and EverPURE for their mold treatments. These companies claim both are safe for people who are seriously ill and/or who suffer with severe chemical sensitivities. I was told that InstaPURE is peroxyacetic acid, also known as peracetic acid, and is created by combining hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. It is supposed to kill mold on contact. I was told that EverPURE is used to inhibit future mold growth and is made with silver ions and zeolite. I know that Medical Medium has told us that zeolites currently on the market are contaminated and damaging to consume in supplement form. I am also aware that we have to be careful with silver supplements. Since it is not as though I am going to eat either of these agents, I’ve been wondering if mold remediation treatments using these agents are actually as safe as claimed. I am sure that a residue of these agents will be left on people’s stuff and that some of it will be absorbed into people’s bodies through their skin.

I am curious: did the green remediation company, which you had treat your home, use the same or similar agents in their treatment? If not, what is your take on the safety of these agents?

    1. Victoria, Thank you so much for your comment. They used INstaPURE in my home. I was very very comfortable with it. I would still think that EverPURe would be OK because you are not ingesting and especially if you don’t have any other options. I hope this helps.

  7. Hi Muneeza!
I accidentally bit into a dried fig and after swallowing that piece, saw that it was all moldy inside. :((( I sprayed some colloidal silver into my mouth.. took a couple drops of oil of oregano.. ate an apple. What else would you suggest? Thanks so much!

        1. Hi Michelle, so glad you were able to get out the apartment with mold! Wash the clothes with a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution first, then wash again with a natural scent-free detergent with 3 drops of rosemary oil and two drops of bergamot, sage, or thyme oil. Be sure to dry thoroughly ideally with a machine. If they still seem to be moldy, wash again with the two oils you didn’t use the first time. I hope this helps!

  8. Have you tips which Filling material for pillows and quilt use? Feather, wool, silk. Maybe share you those in the webinar greening your home?

  9. Muneeza. I wasn’t as educated as you when I had my water leak in my basement. It started in my garage and it is under my house. My brother and friend fixed the pipe and started to clean up the water. We got it all dried out. Nut then the mold grew.I had it remediated. But lookung back, I should have called the insurance company right away and had them clean it up and cover the expenses. Did your insurance company cover your expenses. I wasn’t so smart with my issue. I believe it is still causing me problems. Hrlp

  10. Dear Muneeza, thanks for sharing these tips. I have a mould situation in one of the rooms and bathroom in my apartment. I was wondering if you could clarify if the diffusing blend has to run in the whole apartment or just in the affected room, and if my child can inhale the blends or is it better done when he is in school. Thanks once again
