The Medical Medium® Morning Cleanse
The Morning Cleanse taps into the true nature of how your liver works and what it needs to thrive. At its most basic elements, the Medical Medium® Morning Cleanse is 16-32 oz of lemon water, 16-32 oz of celery juice, and a fat-free breakfast consisting of fruit, smoothies, gluten-free oatmeal, millet, squash, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. After the lemon water and celery juice, there is a 15-30 minute break before you consume anything else.
The key to the Morning Cleanse is staying fat-free until noon (if you have an alternative sleep-waking schedule, the equivalent of noon would be when you typically have your second meal of the day). If you want to take the morning cleanse to the next level, bring in a portion of watermelon juice between your celery juice and breakfast.
Anthony William, the Medical Medium®, first outlined an approachable morning cleanse in his book Liver Rescue and called it the Liver Rescue Morning. It wasn’t until his book Cleanse to Heal that it was upgraded and expanded to include celery juice and the option for an additional 16oz of water in the late morning.
The Morning Cleanse is a popular healing movement in the Medical Medium® community because of how effective and easy it is to do. The cleansing window in the morning is critical to take advantage of if you have autoimmune, chronic illness, or symptoms and conditions. The environmental toxins we are exposed to daily but have no control over make it essential to cleanse in the morning- if we don’t, we won’t be able to get ahead of them. If they are allowed to accumulate in our bodies, it could lead to health complications down the road.
The Heavy Metal Detox Cleanse
You’ve probably heard about this cleanse—it’s so popular that many people have permanently adopted it! This cleanse gets everything in your body out that needs to go, and the level of cleansing is extraordinary when you follow this routine.
Many people also use the Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie, which takes their morning cleanse to a more advanced level. This smoothie is a powerful combination of specific ingredients to root out and cleanse toxic heavy metals from your body and liver: spirulina, barley grass juice powder, dulse, wild blueberries, and cilantro. I call these the ‘Fab Five’ ingredients of heavy metal detox. Additional ingredients are added to the smoothie as the base, like bananas, orange juice, and water or coconut water, to help bring all those Fab Five ingredients together to do their job in a delicious, palatable way. It doesn’t stop there, though, as this smoothie will cleanse chemicals, gasoline, radiation, and more from your body.
Lemon water, celery juice, and the Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie (HMDS) are a step-by-step protocol you can follow, with each component geared to cleanse toxins from your system. Why wait 15-30 minutes after lemon water and after celery juice? We want each healing tonic to be as effective as possible and to give it time to digest. Also, since it is best to have celery juice on an empty stomach, waiting 15 – 20 minutes after lemon water allows the stomach to be totally empty again. Lemon water primes metals to be removed, and celery juice helps your tissues restore the damage caused by toxic heavy metals and helps loosen them from body tissue, and also primes your liver to get ready to release toxic heavy metals and other chemicals, which can be picked up and bound by the incoming HMDS.
Staying free from fats during this time will keep your blood from thickening, making it easier for toxins and toxic heavy metals to leave. Not only that, the moment you consume fats, your detoxification halts.
Why Am I Going Over All of This?
So often, my clients get excited about the morning cleanse and commit to it as a temporary cleanse or daily habit. I commend these actions, especially for those who are looking to move past chronic pain and symptoms in their bodies. What I often see happen is that it takes people too long to get through each component of the Morning Cleanse – sometimes finishing well into the afternoon!
If your morning cleanse routine takes too long, this will cause your blood sugar to drop. This is especially the case when taking too long between lemon water and celery juice and then celery juice to the heavy metal detox smoothie, through which your body receives the first significant influx of calories from glucose. When blood sugar drops, the adrenal glands, which are on top of your kidneys, are signaled to produce more adrenaline. And the adrenaline can feed pathogens in your body, which can cause more symptoms and make you feel unwell. Also, significant gaps in getting enough glucose set you up for cravings and crashes later in the day.
Don’t be afraid to drink your lemon water and celery juice quickly; don’t be afraid to even chug it! You want to get these down and your morning moving swiftly every morning. When my family sips their way through their morning drinks, I remind them that it’s not meant to be savored for hours. If it hurts to drink quickly, or you’re physically unable to do much more than sip, it could indicate that your liver is quite overburdened and toxic. Use a timer to keep you on track to finish your liquids within a specific time frame, and to time the 15-30 minute window between components. We use this very inexpensive magnetic fridge timer.
If you aim for 32oz of lemon water, celery juice, and a smoothie but fall short of the 2.5-hour window, cut your liquids down to a more manageable amount. You can do 16oz as a baseline for everything. You can even do 8 oz of celery juice or less if you need to. The point is to tailor the Morning Cleanse to your needs so it becomes manageable. Try cutting your smoothie in half and saving the rest for later if necessary.
To increase again do it slowly, 4 ounces at a time over a period of a few weeks so you can maintain the timing. This is important for preventing large drops in blood sugar which would in turn trigger adrenaline.
I do the Morning Cleanse with the Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie. I start my morning routine between 6:30 and 7 AM with lemon water and celery juice, and then I get my kids ready to go to their classes. I will drink my HMDS in the car or when I get back home. This means I am done by 8:30 AM daily and snacking again by 10:30!
Finishing your morning protocol in a timely way allows you to get in more healing foods later on, versus what would happen if you kept sipping into the afternoon. Do you not have time in the morning to juice celery? Juice it the night before and store it in an airtight container in your fridge for 24 hours. After breakfast, you can snack on fat-free foods as much as you need. This allows your liver and brain to top up on necessary glucose and replenish their stores.
Liver Rescue: A Simplified Version
In Liver Rescue, Anthony William details a simplified version of the Morning Cleanse. It wasn’t until Cleanse To Heal that the Morning Cleanse was upgraded to include celery juice and an additional 16oz of water.
Suppose you are busy and need a simplified version. In that case, you can do 16-32 ounces of lemon water first thing, followed 15-30 minutes later by a fat-free breakfast consisting of the same plant-based options listed above: fruit, smoothies, oatmeal, millet, squash, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. In this version, you are still fat-free and hydrating your body, allowing it to replenish glucose, electrolytes, and sodium. The natural rhythm of your liver’s detox cycle is tapped into, and you are expelling toxins!
Other Important Details
Do you have hypoglycemia, low blood sugar in the morning, adrenal fatigue, or shakes due to fatigue? Adding honey or maple syrup to your lemon water, eating some fruit first thing, and then continuing your morning protocols will help. It won’t suit you to be starving while you are waiting to get to your breakfast.
If you want to switch your liquids order, do celery juice first, then lemon water. To take your Morning Cleanse to the next level, add in 16-32 ounces of watermelon- blended or juiced is best!
