This past summer my oldest daughter Hanaan had the opportunity to travel to Peru through a language exchange program. These types of programs safely connect you with people in other countries so you can immerse yourself in the language of your choice. Excited at the prospect of my daughter experiencing a different culture and furthering her ability to speak Spanish, we began to prepare her for her trip.
Preparing for Peru
When we learned Peru was an option, we started doing research and learned that Peru has over 6000 different varieties of potatoes, and lots of different fresh fruits and vegetables available. When her plans became more clear, we checked out where she was to be staying and found organic stores where she could purchase raw honey, clean coconut oil, dried fruit, nuts, and clean chips (for snacks).
The family she stayed with was able to cook the majority of her food without oil, and this was a really wonderful bonus and commitment from them. They even helped us find her a clean bottled spring water, so she would not have to drink the unfiltered fluoridated tap water… And we really lucked out here.
I believe that whilst luck plays a role, it is really God and the Angels who are opening up the doors we never knew existed to find ways to experience the world on our own terms and without sacrificing our health. I believe you can apply this to any situation but especially when you are traveling in the world. It really is important to do your own research, ask the right questions and find solutions – we did all that before making a decision for her to go. And we do that when we travel too.

Creating a Plan
We were clear on our non-negotiable items. It was really important for her to have the foods, supplements, and supplies that would keep her healthy so she could enjoy her experiences of travel and further her ability to speak Spanish. My daughter committed to doing lemon water and the Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie every morning. She skipped the celery juice because the family she stayed with didn’t have a juicer (and yes we explored the feasibility of getting her a juicer, but the issue was they had no extra fridge space to store celery).
Then we thought about what needed to happen to help her continue her Medical Medium protocols without celery juice for 2.5 months. This is where I planned her supplements and talked about the kinds of foods she could eat. She was able to avoid all the troublemaker foods: no eggs, dairy, gluten, corn, soy, canola, vinegar, nutritional yeast and MSG.
It was such a bonus that Peru just happened to have an abundance of foods that routinely make it into her diet and protocols, and that stores nearby could continue to support her once she got there. Peru has a very proud culinary scene, and the heart of that stems from how high quality the sourced food is. I then created a packing list for her.

Overall, I would say that it is not always easy to let your kids experience the world on their own. However, the more that you prepare them and do your research the easier it gets. Because I trusted her program and knew that she would have access to what she needed to thrive, I was able to stress and worry less about the what-ifs. The thing that I worried about the most? Making sure she was eating every 1.5 – 2 hours. So there were a lot texts checking on that. She told me that although it was hard to do, she felt so much stronger for eating consistently and keeping up with her supports.
Hanaan said that steamed Peruvian potatoes taste SOOO MUCH better than any of the best potatoes in the USA and that the local food was amazing. She loved the natural taste of fruits and veggies.

A big thanks goes to Jessica, Juan-Carlos, Ghimela and her sisters for taking the best care of Hanaan whilst she was abroad. You made her experience unforgettable.

Let me know in the comments if you guys have traveled internationally and how you prepared for your trip!
To your health and happiness,
