Are You Neurodivergent? Exposing the Neurodivergence Myth

Are you wondering if you or someone you know are neurodivergent?

There’s been a lot of talk lately about neurodivergence and neurodiversity.

There’s no question that neurological disorders have been growing at an alarming rate.

But is a neurodivergent diagnosis legitimate, or is this just another medical industry trend meant to keep us in the dark about the true cause of health conditions?

Neurodivergence is a term that was created in the 1990s by Australian sociologist Judy Singer who was trying to call attention to marginalized people suffering from neurological conditions (more background here).

Now, the medical establishment and even the World Economic Forum are bringing neurodivergence and neurodiversity into doctor’s offices and places of business as a new trend.

According to global consulting firm Deloitte, 10-20% of the global population is considered neurodivergent.

But what does this term actually mean?

Essentially, the mainstream is using a neurodivergent label as a way to normalize neurological disorders. Click To Tweet

Being neurodivergent might mean you experience ADHD, ADD, autism, dyslexia, depression, Tourette’s Syndrome, dyspraxia (a challenge with coordination and motor skills), dyscalculia (difficulty working with numbers), Asperger’s Syndrome, or really any neurological condition.

Neurodivergence is a catch-all term. Click To Tweet

This term encourages us not to see ourselves as struggling with a very real condition – “I may have ADD, but I’m not sick, I’m neurodivergent.”

Now, organizations like the World Economic Forum are encouraging us to celebrate these conditions as a potential asset.

According to Deloitte, “Teams with neurodivergent professionals in some roles can be 30% more productive than those without them.”

I am all for removing stigmas associated with any health condition, but is it right for us to see “neurodivergence” and other neurological health conditions as normal or as a means of increasing productivity?

Or is that taking things a step too far?

Conditions considered to be neurodivergent are increasing at an alarming rate, which may be, in part, why the medical establishment wants to normalize them.

If medicine doesn’t have answers for health conditions, their typical course of action is to normalize them and then propose profit-driving management options like pharmaceutical drugs.

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control, children born in 1992 had a 1 in 150 chance of experiencing autism.

Children born in 2012 have a 1 in 36 chance of experiencing autism, which is four times higher than it was just 20 years prior. Click To Tweet

This is not normal, and it is not a reflection of natural diversity of any kind. Our children’s brains and bodies are being affected by something very real.

The medical establishment will not acknowledge the problem because they don’t have an answer.

If mainstream medicine does have a sense of the cause, it will be unlikely to acknowledge it because a cure removes the need for treatment. We’ve seen this story play out with countless other health conditions.

Because neurodivergent is a new term, there is no test that can say you are neurodivergent in a general sense.

Neurodivergent symptoms could be one of hundreds that all characterize various conditions defined by the medical industry, including anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), autism, ADD, ADHD, and others.

Signs of neurodivergence could be anything from a short attention span to learning difficulties to an active imagination.

Casting a wide net means the medical industry does not have to get more specific about the causes or solutions when it comes to any of these conditions.

We should always be cautious of any attempts to normalize illness of any kind.

This is not to say that neurological conditions of any kind are not real or serious. I see every day in my work how much pain and suffering is caused by neurological issues like Tourette’s Syndrome, restless leg syndrome, autism, anxiety, and so many more.

My issue is when a manufactured cultural trend encourages us to see our symptoms and conditions as something we should just accept.

In other words, now that you have a label of being neurodivergent, you can move forward with life and accept your condition as normal – it’s just part of who you are.

In the graphic below, posted on the World Economic Forum’s website, there are even arguments being made for heightened abilities that are seen to accompany certain neurodivergent conditions.

For example, if you experience dyslexia, you may also experience greater creativity and 3D mechanical skills.

It’s an attempt by establishment voices to make those who experience neurological conditions not only feel normal about their symptoms but embrace them as an asset.

In Brain Saver, author Anthony William (the Medical Medium ®) describes how toxins like heavy metals in the brain cause disruptive conditions like anxiety, depression, autism, ADD, and more while at the same time causing heightened creativity and genius-level brain activity in some individuals.

So, it’s true that an individual with a neurodivergent label may be both impaired and enhanced by their condition, but that does not give us cause to celebrate these conditions and embrace them as simply a form of human expression.

There are true root causes for every condition on the neurodivergent list. Click To Tweet

In a nutshell, the primary causes of neurological conditions are a combination of toxins and pathogens in the brain, liver, and body.

The toxins at the root of most neurological conditions are toxic heavy metals and/or chemical neuro antagonists.

Toxic metals like mercury, aluminum, cadmium, toxic copper, arsenic, lead, nickel, barium, and toxic calcium build up in our brains from a long list of exposures and can even be inherited from our ancestors who may have been exposed in factories or from mercury-based medical treatments of the past.

Learn more about sources toxic heavy metal exposure, how common it is, and how to cleanse in my blogs, Losing Our Minds to Toxic Heavy Metals and Understanding the Role of Toxic Heavy Metals in Chronic Illness.

The chemical enemies of our neurological health include pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, DDT, chemical fertilizers, fluoride, smoke exposure of any kind, chlorine, and toxic fragrances (perfumes, air fresheners, household cleaning products, and more).

These toxins are bad enough on their own, but most of us all walk around with pathogens like the Epstein-Barr Virus and shingles virus in one of their many forms inside of us, along with bacteria like strep.

Viral and bacterial pathogens consume toxins like fuel, generating neurotoxic waste as they eat and excrete. This combination is horribly antagonistic to our neurological health.

The reason you won’t hear these truths discussed by mainstream medical voices is that exploring the true root causes of the growing number of neurological illnesses we are seeing will lead to questions and answers that many industries do not want us to ask or answer.

For example, how common is exposure to pesticides and fungicides in everyday life from our neighbors’ gardens, from clothes we order online (learn more in my blog, Is Your Clothing Making You Sick?), or from furniture we buy from a large manufacturer? And what is the impact of those chemicals on our health?

Another reason modern medicine won’t explore these causes is that the medical industry has a business model to protect.

Looking more closely at root causes and effective recovery tools will spell the end of traditional treatments which generate profit and prop up the industry itself.

The key takeaway here is not accepting a diagnosis as a life sentence. There are answers for you. Illness is never normal.

Yes, our bodies are unique and diverse. But they are meant to function similarly and healthfully.

It’s key that we see through the wool being pulled over our eyes so that we continue to seek out truths that empower us to overcome our conditions.

Look out for our upcoming series on common conditions labeled as neurodivergent. We’ll focus on several of the most common neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, autism, ADD/ADHD, and OCD, with in-depth information about their true cause and how to heal.

There’s a piece of advice I offer to people who are struggling with who and what to trust in this world.

That struggle of who to believe is a very natural feeling with so many lies all around us from every source. It’s not easy to know who to trust. Which is why this advice is so crucial.

How does it make you feel?

When a doctor says to you, “You will suffer from this condition for the rest of your life, and there’s nothing we can do to stop it,” how does that feel?

When you are concerned for your child, who is struggling to stay attentive and engaged at school, and a specialist says, “There’s nothing we can do to improve the situation other than write a prescription for your child which they will need for life,” do you feel encouraged? Empowered?

If I tell you, “The road to recovery will be challenging, but there are real reasons you are sick and real actions you can take to heal,” how does that feel?

Whatever makes you feel expansive, hopeful, open, and empowered – that is the path to follow.

I pray we will all find that path through this confusing world and that we will continue to hold a beacon of truth for each other as we discover healing truths and show that recovery is possible, even in this challenging time.

I am here to support a journey to health in whatever way I can for as many individuals as I can. That’s my purpose.

I am honored to support you through this blog and in any other way that’s right for you.

To your health and peace,
