Today, I’m excited to share with you some awesome information about nightshades!  If you don’t know what nightshades are, that’s okay.  A lot of misinformation has been going around about them, so what you do know about them may not be accurate.  That’s okay, too, we’re going to clear all that up, and talk about how awesome they actually are, both for flavor and, more importantly, for your health!

Nightshades are part of the huge plant family called Solanaceae, which includes about 2,700 different species of plants!  Not all of these are edible, of course, so we are only going to talk about the edible nightshades, and those include:

  • Potatoes
  • Eggplant
  • Bell peppers
  • Tomatoes

For years, so much misinformation has been going around about edible nightshades actually being toxic. They are thought to cause inflammation, arthritis, and other chronic illness due to their high level of alkaloids in them. People have been avoiding these foods for years due to fears of toxicity, alkaloids, and the threat of serious health conditions.

In his fantastic book, “Life Changing Foods,” Anthony William shares from the high level Spirit that speaks to him, or the living word, Compassion,  that the exact opposite is true about edible nightshades.  They are actually rich in vitamins, nutrients, and amino acids that are wonderful for your health.  What’s toxic is all the junk we add to them.

A baked potato with the skin on has potassium, vitamin C, fiber, antioxidants, and amino acids like lysine – everything that is beneficial to your health!  However, when we fry them in toxic oils, drown them in butter, sour cream, and cheese, of course their health benefits get lost in all the junk.  Tomatoes and bell peppers are loaded with vitamins and antioxidants too, but it’s when we stuff them with sausage and cheese, or process them into sugar-filled sauces, like ketchup, they’re terrible for our bodies.

When you follow a Medical Medium™ protocol, and enjoy nightshades in a simple, natural form, you can enjoy incredible health benefits from edible nightshades.  Dress up a baked potato with some amazing fresh herbs such as chive or dill, or top it with a delicious, homemade salsa!  Snack on some red bell pepper sticks with some fresh hummus, or try drizzling some olive oil, lemon juice, and fresh herbs on steamed eggplant.  Yum!

Now, there are some things to know about nightshades – just like any other fruit or vegetable, they need to be ripe for safety and benefits.  No green tomatoes!  Also, green bell peppers are often just unripe bell peppers that will turn red, yellow, or orange, so go with those instead of green ones.  Make sure all stems are removed, too.  Also, the Medical Medium™  protocol only recommends edible nightshades, like the ones we’ve been discussing.

For a delicious way to enjoy eggplant, the unsung hero of edible nightshades, try this delicious, natural Mediterranean Baba Ganoush, which is similar to hummus, but instead uses eggplant.

1 eggplant

1 tbsp raw organic tahini

2 cloves garlic

1 lime,  juiced

½ tsp cayenne (optional)

Salt to taste

2 tbsp olive oil

Cilantro to garnish

Paprika to garnish

Directions:

Bake the eggplant for 45 minutes at 350 F. Once cooked, allow to cool. This step can be done the night before or the day before you intend to make baba ganoush. Once cool, soak in water to peel off the skin. Now your eggplant is ready.

Blend the eggplant with all the ingredients above and serve with a sprinkling of paprika and garnish with cilantro.  Serve with fresh veggie sticks for a delicious snack or appetizer!

Enjoy the amazing health benefits of this delicious meal!
